Newsletter 02/2017

Chairman's Message | Introducing our 'new look' Newsletter

With 2017 well underway it is a pleasure to reintroduce the newsletter after a hiatus.  As you will have noticed, we’ve been upgrading our communications over the past 6 months.

Our new responsive, and soon to be interactive, website is now live.  If you haven’t seen it, have a look www.abcduae.com.  It is now responsive on any device so hopefully this makes your life easier when looking up members, member’s benefits or booking for events.  We will be adding an online forum to this very soon.  It’s a place for you to connect with others, share information or post your job ads.

Annual General Meeting

It may seem like our AGM is late this year.  Compared with other years, it is.  This is because we have now moved our financial year to a calendar year.  Our audited accounts will now be available in February each year so our new AGM date will be March.  Thanks as always to Tim Howe of Al Ghaith & Co who audits our accounts each year.  For those who don’t know Tim has been auditing our account for many years now and we greatly value your ongoing contribution.

We look forward to seeing you at the AGM on Tuesday 14 March at the Media One Hotel.

Your chance to get involved

If you are interested in getting involved with Australian Business Council, we’d love you to stand for board positions.  The tenure of a board position is for 2 years.  The role is as involved as you’d like it to be, and varied.  Voting of board members happens at the AGM.  If you are keen to stand, please let Justine Cullen know via phone:  04 367 2460 or email: members@abcduae.com or keep an eye out for the Nomination Form that will go out with the AGM notification.

We have seen a few board changes over the past three months with Steven Speter and Peter Vanderwal stepping down from their positions due to work (and life) commitments.  In the interim we have been lucky to have Barry O’Mahoney, Dean of Business at University of Wollongong Dubai and Neil Judd, Sales & Marketing Director at Techwize join the board to continue the momentum.

Through the efforts of the great team in the Office and the Board, we have steadily and consistently seen our membership grow.  With over 950 active members, we have diversified our Event Programme and will introduce initiatives to help you continue to develop the business relationships you want.

2016 UOWD Alumni Awards

Every year our partner, the University of Wollongong Dubai, recognises some of its high achieving Alumni for their contribution in their various fields with awards for Professional Excellence, Social Impact, Young Alumni Award and Research & Innovation. I am continually inspired by these high achievers and the difference they make both here in the UAE and internationally. In honour of this recognition, each of the winners are now members of the ABCD and we hope to get some of them to present to the membership some time during the year ahead.

Finally, thank you to everyone who is part of Australian Business Council Dubai.  It is great to see a community working together to help each other.  What could be an interesting or unpredictable year for some of us, please reach out if you need support or can help fellow Members.

It has been a pleasure working with our sponsors, partners and fellow board members for the past two years.   I wish everyone a productive and successful 2017.

With best wishes
