According to the World Health Organisation, one person in the world goes blind every five seconds and Shurooq AlBanna has made it her life’s work to make a difference. Shurooq is the Marketing and Communication Specialist for the Noor Dubai Foundation (NDF), a not-for-profit organisation focusing on the eradication of preventable forms of blindness. Her role has taken her to remote areas across Africa and Asia to bring life-changing treatment to communities in need.

Shurooq is passionate about encouraging and training volunteers to assist NDF. She oversees extensive awareness campaigns both within the UAE and overseas, and trains volunteer admins to work in the field. Inspired by a 12-year-old girl from Mali who regained her sight following surgery, Shurooq single-handedly manages NDF’s innovative ART 4 SIGHT program, the only Middle Eastern art exhibition thus far in support of the organisation’s important work.

Shurooq is a graduate of the University of London in Genetics and Forensic Sciences but shifted her career focus from science to humanitarian efforts while completing her Master of Strategic Marketing at UOWD.

Using her power of words to influence change, she is writing a regular column for Sail e-magazine entitled ‘A Moment of Contemplation’, focusing on the deeper perspectives on humanity. In 2013, she became the first Arab woman in the 90-year history of Toastmasters International to win a place in the top 3 positions in the World Championships, competing against 33,000 people from all over the world.

This exceptional young woman speaks and writes fluently in Arabic, English and French, and also speaks basic Spanish. In 2016, her vast contribution to society saw her placed second in the Most Distinguished Female Employee category of the highly competitive Dubai Government Excellence Program.
